SustainabiliTEA: Intro to Energy and Climate

Updated: Apr 13, 2019

Caring about the environment is something you can participate in as an interest, hobby, career, or even a lifestyle. Regardless of your stance, it’s critical you remain educated on it. The Energy and Climate committee of Students for Sustainability is one way to learn from students with a background or passion for sustainability. We want to help spread the word, inspire others, and leave this university better than when we came!

Our committees’ focus is towards energy and climate, and how energy usage affects climate change. We also try to change energy usage on campus and encourage others to do the same at home. Currently, we are working to reach out to high schoolers to teach them about choices they can make to lower their energy usage. We are also in the process of implementing solar panels as part of an agrivoltaic system on the roof of the ENR2 building on campus. We have also started working with Parking and Transportation Services to install more car charging stations in the parking garages. Lastly, we are working on an Energy Initiative to upgrade energy systems in outdated buildings.

This platform will allow us to discuss different environmental issues going on within our campus, community, and world and collaboratively find solutions to combat these issues. It’s important to not let these burdens continue on without our generations voice in the matter. By educating ourselves through university level efforts, we can bring our experiences to the real world and help make an impact on the present and future generations.

Here, we will discuss issues regarding global policy, dietary impacts, agricultural practices, and lifestyles that we as students can partake in to make a difference. The first step in reconstructing our future is educating ourselves with the current obstacles we are faced with and change our perspective as to what we can accomplish.
